What we call the beginning if often the end
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from.  And every phrase
And sentence is an end and a beginning,
Every poem an epitah.  And any action
Is a step to the block, to the fire, down the sea’s throat
Or to an illegible stone; and that is where we start.

We die with the dying;
See, they depart, and we go with them.
We are born with the dead:
See, they return, and bring us with them.

The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree
Are of equal duration.  A people without history
Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern
Of timeless moments.

Ce  que nous nommons le commencement est

souvent la  fin. Finir c'est commencer.

La fin est là d'où nous partons.

Chaque phrase ou proposition, donc, est fin et

commencement, Chaque poème une épitaphe.

Et toute action est un pas fait vers l'échafaud,

le feu,le gosier de la mer ou vers une pierre illisible;

et c'est de là que nous partons

Nous mourons avec les mourants:

Voyez-les s'en aller et, avec eux, nous-mêmes

Nous naissons avec les défunts :

Voyez-les revenir et, avec eux, nous-mêmes.

Le moment de la rose et le moment de l'if

Sont d'égale durée. Un peuple sans histoire

N'est pas racheté du temps, car l'histoire est un motif

De moments intemporels.
